The True Bamboo Tattoo In Thailand – Everything You Want To Know!

In 2016, I got my first bamboo tattoo in Thailand – a traditional Sak Yant 5 Lines design on my ribs.

It wasn't my first travel tattoo – I've had several – but I prefer the bamboo method. It's much less painful and without the machine's buzz, the experience is more relaxed and pleasant.

If you're considering a bamboo tattoo in Thailand, here's what you need to know – from the history of Thai Sak Yant Tattoos to common questions like pain, longevity, and healing time.

Getting A Bamboo Tattoo In Thailand – Everything You Need To Know!

The Traditional Thai Bamboo Tattoo Truth

For those new to bamboo tattoos, also known as the traditional Thai tattoo technique, it involves a "hand poke" method where ink is manually applied rather than using a traditional tattoo gun, which penetrates the skin 50 to 3,000 times a minute.

In this technique, tattoo needles are attached to a bamboo stick.

Rest assured, this method can be as safe and hygienic as standard gun tattoos when done correctly with fresh needles, which you should always insist on.

Ensure a fresh ink pot (both ink and pot) is used for your tattoo. Observe your tattooist's hygiene practices, such as discarding all towels, ink, and pots after each use.

While some places sterilize and reuse needles, it's best to insist on fresh needles and watch them unwrap them to ensure safety.

Sak Yant Bamboo Tattoos

One of the most iconic and traditional Thai tattoos is the Sak Yant, which gained widespread fame thanks to Angelina Jolie.

The Sak Yant isn't a single design but a style featuring sacred geometry, symbols, and animals.

These tattoos are believed to bestow power, fortune, and other benefits upon the bearer. Traditionally, they are inked by monks and blessed during the Sak Yant ceremony.

The most common design is the Sak Yant 5 Lines Tattoo, also known as Hah Taew, dating back to 1296.

Originally written in ancient Khmer, called Khom, the five lines have evolved slightly over the years, with each line (Yant) carrying a sacred meaning:

  1. Protects from unjust punishment and guards your home.
  2. Shields against bad fortune.
  3. Defends against curses and black magic.
  4. Enhances success, fortune, and luck.
  5. Boosts charisma and love.

Other popular Sak Yant designs include the 8 Directions (Paed Tidt) and the Buddha Peaks (Gao Yord).

If you're considering a Sak Yant tattoo, it's worth researching their meanings or opting for the traditional experience where a monk selects the design best suited for you.

Where to Get Your Bamboo Tattoo in Thailand

Finding the right place for your bamboo tattoo is crucial. It's not just about the placement on your body, but also choosing the right shop.

Based on my experience, personal recommendations are invaluable. There are thousands of bamboo tattoo shops across Thailand, ranging from modern studios to roadside shacks.

Don't rush your decision. Talk to other travelers who have recently gotten inked and get their feedback.

I got my Sak Yant on Koh Phi Phi at Can Do Tattoo, a shop conveniently located under my rented room while I was taking a divemaster course.

For my compass tattoo, I went to Top Tattoo in Khao Lak. The artist was great, the setup was clean, and I know several people who have had bamboo tattoos there with excellent results.

Tips for Choosing a Bamboo Tattoo Shop

  • Take your time deciding on the design.
  • Shop around for prices, but focus more on the artist's portfolio.
  • Strongly consider personal recommendations.
  • Discuss everything with the artist—design, time, etc.
  • Ensure needles are new; don't hesitate to ask to see them being opened.
  • Avoid getting tattoos while intoxicated.

Enjoy your bamboo tattoo experience!

Does a Bamboo Tattoo Hurt?

Compared to modern tattoo techniques, bamboo tattoos are much less painful. Instead of the dragging sensation of a tattoo gun, bamboo tattoos involve a series of small punctures, making the experience more pleasant. It's not pain-free, but definitely more relaxed.

How Quickly Does It Heal?

Bamboo tattoos heal faster than traditional gun tattoos. You can safely return to the water 24-48 hours after getting one, which is why I chose bamboo tattoos while diving in Thailand.

How Long Does It Take?

I was surprised by the efficiency of a skilled bamboo tattooist. My Sak Yant on the ribs took about an hour, including a break. My smaller compass tattoo took around 30 minutes.
